JMU Summer in the Philippines

Summer 2008: May 10 - June 4 (tentative dates)

Program Location

The Philippines is a tropical island archipelago in Southeast Asia located south of Taiwan and east of Vietnam. Ranging in latitude from 20°N to 5°N of the equator. The country enjoys warm temperatures with an overall humid environment.

Academic Program

The Philippines Mabuhay (local language, Tagalog, for “welcome”) study abroad course provides the opportunity to experience and travel in a tropical SE Asian country known for its friendly people. The program involves frequent travel within the country (including different islands), vastly different environments (urban, mountain, lowland, volcanic, costal and coral reef), cultural studies, scuba diving and strenuous long distance hiking. Areas to be visited are Luxon (Manila, Laguna, and Ifugao), Cebu, Bohol, Panay (Boracay) and Negros.

Instructional methods include lectures, guided tours, field work, journal assignments and/or papers.

Tentative course offerings:
GGEOG 200 Geography the Global Dimension, 3 credits
GEOG 315 Field Studies, 3 credits
GEOG 450 The Philippine Islands: Problems, Perils, and Possibilities, 3 credits
GEOG 490 Special Studies in the Philippines, 3 credits
GEOG 491 - International Experience in the Philippines, 3 credits

Accommodations

Students will reside in hotels in Manila, Cebu City, Banaue and Dumaguete, Philippines. Group meals will be provided.
