Intercultural Practicum in Paris
Summer 2012: May 14 to June 8 (tentative dates)
Program Location
Paris – the City of Light - participants will live for one month in the heart of the city within walking distance to the metro, shopping, and restaurants & cafes. Paris is known for its famous buildings and works of art, its chic fashion scene and its modern literary, artistic, and intellectual ideals, and is a must for anyone wishing to experience the best of both contemporary and age old European culture. Once just a village that settled on the "Ile de la Cite" (City Island) on the confluence of the Seine's two branches, Paris has vastly expanded over the centuries, taking the surrounding villages under its wing and making them its own. While the academic practicum is at the heart of the experience, participants will spend four weeks living in Paris exploring all the culture that the city of lights offers. In addition, students will travel overnight to Brugge and Brussels Belgium, and the castles of the Loire Valley. Additional day trips are planned to experience life and culture both in and outside of the city: Learn to play boules with other students in a Parisian park, create crepes during a French cooking lesson, enjoy a formal evening at the opera.
Academic Program
The COE Paris Practicum offers students the opportunity to assist and lead instruction in classrooms at Marymount International School. Participants will enroll in EDUC or ELED 510 during the spring semester and complete the course abroad. Additionally students then register for 3 credits (EDUC 501 or 490) during the summer session in Paris. The instructor will provide a course schedule and syllabus during the spring seminar. Instructional methods include fieldwork, journal assignments and a creative project designed to capitalize on each student’s unique perceptions of Paris, France.
