Art and Culture in Madrid

Academic Program

Madrid, the capital of Spain is a breathtaking city located in the center of Spain. It is home to the most wonderful art collections such as Thyseen, El Prado, and Reina Sofia. Its architecture is unique, the Palacio Real, the Palacio de la Moncloa, la Puerta del Sol, old Madrid with its winding streets, the Plaza mayor and the Gran Via. The madrilenos are very warm and caring and tourists always wish they could stay more. Madrid: where Spain begins…

This intensive three-week program gives students a priceless opportunity to get to know Spain.Students will take Spanish lessons every day and visit the wonderful cities of Segovia, El Escorial and Toledo, as well as local museums and cultural venues. Past groups have also made trips to Cordoba and Barcelona.

During this intensive program, students will enroll in three courses for a total of 9 credit hours. One in the area of literature (GENG 239) and one or two other courses in Spanish Language and Culture for 6 credits, for a total of 9 credit hours.

Instructional methods include lectures, guided tours, journal assignments and/or papers, and tests/exams.

  • GENG 239—Studies in World Literature, (3)
  • SPAN 111—Intensive Spanish--Beginner, (6)
  • SPAN 212—Intensive Spanish--Intermediate, (6)
  • ENG 434/SPAN 434—Latin American Literature, (3)
  • ENG 439/SPAN 439—Spanish Literature (3)

Accommodations

Students will reside with host families in Madrid, Spain. Meals are included.

In addition to the Short-term Application, interested students should submit an essay and a faculty recommendation. A personal interview will also be required. It is preferred that applicants have a 3.0 GPA; however, all applications will be considered.
