Transportation Guides/Info
Underground
The most popular mode of transportation in London is the Underground, more commonly known as the tube. The closest tube stop to Madison House is Goodge Street, where the Northern Line runs down Tottenham Court Road. The Central and Circle Lines are also close by. Upon arrival, you will receive a map of the Tube system. London's Underground is divided into 6 zones radiating out from the city's center. JMU provides each student with a Zone 1 pass, which covers the majority of travel necessary for classes and class outings. The program will reimburse you anytime you need to go beyond Zone 1 for academic reasons.
Buses
The Zone 1 underground pass provided by JMU is also good for use on the London bus system. There are many bus stops within immediate walking distance of Madison House, so buses are frequently more convenient than the tube. You will receive a comprehensive guide on how to get around using this system.
Walking
The Zone 1 pass provided to SIL students is done so for their convenience getting around London. However, students are encouraged to agree to an informal “walking contract” stipulating that they will walk to any destination within 20 minutes of Madison House.
Trains
There are several main train stations scattered throughout London, and is the easiest way to see Great Britain. You can purchase a Young Person's Railcard at any of these stations for about $35-40, giving you a 20% discount on all rail travel around Britain. Also, if you plan to travel for any length of time, you may want to purchase a Britrail Pass, similar to a Eurail Pass. Eurail and Britrail Passes must be purchased in the U.S. (not available in the U.K.), and are not useable in Great Britain.
