Types of Insurance
International Student Identity Card
The ISIC card is the most widely recognized form of international student identification. It is important to note that the insurance included with the ISIC card is the minimum coverage recommended for traveling abroad. To apply for an ISIC card, visit the website: www.myisic.com.
ISIC Card Member Benefits: $300,000 Emergency Evacuation; $25,000 Repatriation of Remains; $25,000 Accident Medical Expense (Includes $500 Emergency Dental Coverage); $5,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment - Air; $1,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment - All Other; $500 Lost Document Replacement (includes your ISIC card); $165 per day Sickness/Hospital Benefit (up to 61 days); $100 Baggage Delay; $100 Travel Delay; Free - Travel Guard Assistance
Health Insurance
Students enrolled in JMU programs are responsible for health care and travel expenses and processes related to participation in its programs. Participants are expected to assume the responsibility in obtaining health insurance coverage sufficient for any injury or illness that might occur during a study abroad program. JMU and its representatives make no representations concerning the adequacy of health insurance provisions.
Trip Cancellation Insurance
In addition, students are strongly encouraged to purchase travel and trip cancellation insurance that would provide monetary support for non-refundable expenses and service charges imposed by public carriers and travel suppliers, including baggage loss or delay. JMU does not represent or act as an agent for, and cannot control the acts or omissions of, any host institution, host family, transportation carrier, hotel, tour organizer or other provider of goods or services involved in the program. In the event of a voluntary withdrawal, JMU may be unable to refund student fees; however, students may make claim for unrecoverable expenses through a travel insurance provider.
Questions for Your Insurance Provider
- Does your travel policy cover you in all the countries to which you may be traveling?
- Are there any pre-admission requirements, e.g. medical testing, for your policy that are NOT practical outside the United States?
- Does your policy include medical evacuation and emergency repatriation services? Will it cover a family member's cost to come to your site if you are hospitalized for an extended period of time?
- What about reimbursement? Do you have to pay for services up front and be reimbursed later? What documentation will you need to get a refund?
- Are you covered by a national health insurance in your host country?
- Do you have to be a full-time student to remain insured?
- Does your policy have adequate accident and illness limits?
- Does your policy cover you while driving an automobile or motorcycle? (FYI: oIP strongly recommends that you DO NOT DRIVE while overseas.)
- Are emotionally or psychologically-related issues covered by your insurance?
- Does your policy cover lost luggage, stolen property, or flight cancellations?
- Does your policy cover non-academic activities, such as pony-trekking, swimming, biking?
