John Scherpereel
John Scherpereel has been a faculty member at James Madison University since 2005. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003), an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1998), and a B.A. in Government and International Studies and Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame (1997).
Dr. Scherpereel’s research focuses on the causes and consequences of EU enlargement, the relationship between politics and administration, and the dynamics of territorial governance in the EU and its member-states. His book, Governing the Czech Republic and Slovakia: Between State Socialism and the European Union, was published by FirstForum Press in 2008. He has also published in West European Politics, the Journal of European Integration, Regional and Federal Studies, Administration and Society, and a variety of edited volumes. Currently, Dr. Scherpereel is working on a project analyzing the “Turkish question” in EU politics and the rhetorical devices used by European actors to justify Turkish inclusion and exclusion.
At JMU, Dr. Scherpereel regularly teaches courses on European Union politics, the politics of Central and Eastern Europe, comparative politics, and global perspectives on the United States.
