Short-term Programs

 

Applications are being accepted and process on a rolling basis until March 1,2013 or until this program is full, whichever comes first.

 

 

 

Location

The program will be at Punta Leona Hotel and Club Beach Resort.  It  is a coastal resort located in the Province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica.  It is about an hour drive for the capital San Jose. The resort’s accommodations for national and international guests include 108 standard rooms and 27 fully equipped apartments. Punta Leona Hotel and Club Beach Resort employs approximately 335 people and its management is committed to being a leader in ecotourism.

Additional Information

Possible projects:  Please note that some of these topics can become your senior thesis project

  1. Energy savings: this can start with energy audit of the facilities (and possibly community houses around the resorts) and recommend possible actions.  This can include educating  and informing the community about the process (what we are doing, why,  how, and what to expect)
  2. Solar and wind, rainfall and other metrological data measurement.
  3. PV power plant for charging golf carts
  4. PV power plant for emergency backup (internet, communication and vital lighting)
  5. PV power plant for street lighting
  6. Solar thermal collectors for hot water
  7. Grey water usage treatment and irrigation
  8. Developing educational material for resort workers and guests

Accommodations

Students will stay in hotels  for the duration of the program. Most meals will be covered by the program fee (3 meals a day - 21 meals per week).

This program is open to students from all ISAT and Engineering majors.

Students must meet the required minimum GPA of 2.5 in order to participate.

In addition to the oIP application form, students are required to submit the following material:

  • A supplemental essay
  • Attend an interview with the program director
  • A completed Faculty recommendation form which can also be found by following the link to Applications and Forms
