Justice Issues in Australia

Program Location

The group will travel to three cities on the east coast of Australia: Sydney (the most famous city and site of the 2000 Summer Olympics); Canberra (the capital); and Cairns (the departure city for the Great Barrier Reef). In addition to the outings and tours related to the Justice Studies course, the proposed itinerary includes a guided tour of the Sydney Harbor, an eco-tour through the Blue Mountains, a visit to the tropical rainforest in Far North Queensland, and a day out on the Great Barrier Reef.

Academic Program

prog_abroad_jmu_australia_justice_artThe program will explore justice issues in Australia. The group will examine criminal justice issues through guest lectures and guided tours (including a prison and restorative justice center). Global justice issues will be highlighted with trips to High Court, Parliament, U.S. and Aboriginal tent embassies, and the Aboriginal Law Centre. Finally, the group will focus on social justice issues by visiting local social service agencies (such as Rozelle Psychiatric Hospital) and important Aboriginal sites (Tjapukai Cultural Park and the Yarrabah Community Reservation).   

Instructional methods include lectures, guided tours, and journal assignments.

Accommodations

Students will reside in hotels in in Sydney, Canberra, and Cairns. Group meals will be provided.
