JMU Summer in Antwerp

Summer 2012: May 13 to June 23 (tentative dates)

Program Location

The Summer in Antwerp is offering a special six-week session in Antwerp. Participants will study global marketing and international logistics and complete six credit hours.

Students will take their courses at the historic University of Antwerp.

The program of study includes trips to Turkey (Istanbul and Ephesus), Greece (Island of Mykanos and Athens), Spain (Barcelona and Cava Vineyard area), and, of course, Belgium (Brussels, Brugge/Ze Brugge, Loeven). The group will visit businesses, governmental institutions, and cultural sites as part of the program. In addition, the students will have three free weekends to explore European cities on their own.

Academic Program  

  • MKT 460: Global Marketing - Prerequisite: COB 300
    This course examines marketing in international environments, including foreign entry, local marketing in individual countries and global or standardized marketing across many countries. The course will center on international business-to-business relationships, including economics, politics, culture, demography, geography/nature, and technology in business. At the end of the course, the students will complete a team project involving an international business opportunity between the US and Europe.
  • COB TBD: Special Studies in International Logistics - Prerequisite: COB 300
    international logistics class familiarize students with the international rules, regulations and requirements of importing and exporting goods. Students learn about customs, free trade zones and the tariff system; classes also discuss potential terrorist threats. In addition to learning about the various modes of transportation available for international trading, international logistics classes discuss the role of government in the global economy and the role of logistics in global business. After completing international logistics classes, students will be prepared to effectively manage international importing and exporting operations.

    Instructional methods will include:
  • Lectures from JMU professors
  • Guest speaking arrangements from local professionals
  • Guided tours
  • Field work
  • Journal assignments
  • Team project presentation and paper
  • Final exam

Accommodations

Students will reside in hotels as well as, residence halls and dormitories. Group meals will be provided.

Additionally:

  • US citizens are not required entry visa to Schengen countries
  • US citizens will need to purchase ($20) a multiple entry visa when entering in Istanbul, Turkey
  • Cell phones (especially smart ones) and laptops are highly encouraged

A personal interview will be required. Applicants must have a 2.0 minimum and COB 300 is a course prerequisite.
