FINAL EXAMINATION

FALL SEMESTER, 1999

Students are asked to prepare responses to all ten questions listed below. Questions come directly from learning outcomes identified during the semester by either the Instructor or students. To assist you in preparing your responses, you may use any written source or discuss the questions with anyone you wish. On December 13, we will meet in room A12 of Harrison Hall from 3:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Students will be asked to write responses to Questions 1 and 2 and responses to two of the remaining eight questions; the latter two to be determined by the Instructor on the 13th. Students may NOT use any sources in writing their responses in class and are asked to write their responses in blue books, at least one for each question.

  1. Identify at least three landmark events in the evolution of higher education. For every landmark event, please describe the event; state the significance of the event as it occurred; and explain how the event influences contemporary trends, organizational structure and/or practice in American Higher Education.
  2. Identify one U.S. constitutional amendment and two pieces of Federal legislation that have had a significant impact on American Higher Education. State its major provisions: the areas in higher education most affected; the pros and cons of at least one related major issue, and three specific ways in which risk of criminal or civil liability can be reduced.
