Dr. Schmitt-Harsh is arriving to JMU following a Postdoctoral Fellowship position at Carleton College. She completed her Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where she was a research assistant at the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population and Environmental Change (CIPEC). Her research and educational training is interdisciplinary, with projects focused on land-use/cover change and social-ecological dynamics in Guatemalan coffee agroforestry systems, Zambian smallholder agricultural systems, and urban forest systems in the Midwest, US. Mikaela is joined by her son Kaleb and husband Joe, who is a new member of the biology department.
