References

The James Madison University Editorial Board has adopted the following references as the standard for editorial style.

If you regularly write, compile or copy-edit James Madison University published communications, you will need these books for reference. The stylebook and dictionary can be purchased by request at the JMU Bookstore or ordered online.

Equal Employment Opportunity

Use the following EEO/ADA statement exactly as written in all communications recruiting prospective students or employees: James Madison University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, veteran status, political affiliation or disability (in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act) with respect to employment or admissions, or in connection with its programs or activities. Inquiries or requests for reasonable accommodation may be directed to the activity coordinator, the appropriate university office, or the Office of Affirmative Action, JMU, Harrisonburg, VA 22807, (540) 568–6991.

Americans with Disabilities Act

Communications that invite people to the JMU campus or to a JMU event should include the following wording: James Madison University is committed to providing equal access to its programs and facilities for persons with disabilities. Those persons with special needs should notify [include the telephone number and/or name of the JMU organization extending the invitation here] at least 14 days before the event you will attend.

Guidelines

If you plan to include the university mission statement in a published communication and space allows, we also encourage you to precede the mission statement with the following: James Madison University is a public, comprehensive university and is the only university in America named for James Madison. The university offers programs on the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, but its primary emphasis is on the undergraduate student. JMU provides a total education to students — one that has a broad range of liberal arts as its foundation and encompasses an extensive variety of professional and pre-professional programs, augmented by a multitude of learning experiences outside the classroom. The high quality of the JMU experience has been recognized repeatedly in many national publications.
