Special Meetings

February 27, 2007: Yohna Chambers, Steve Hedrick
Attended the Chief Human Resources Officers Council and Compensation Managers meeting at George Mason University. This group is comprised of all chief Human Resources Officers from public higher education institutions within the Commonwealth. Steve attended a special Employee Relations break-out session in the afternoon which provided an opportunity for Employee Relations Managers to discuss and share effective practices.

October 17-19, 2006: Steve Hedrick, Wanda Layman, Keri Sue Brunk, Krystal Smith
Attended The Virginia DHRM Leadership Conference in Virginia Beach, VA. The conference included networking opportunities with state leaders and colleagues; a session on the Governor's priorities for state agencies presented by Bill Leighty, Chief of Staff; a review of state policy changes with the Director of DHRM and other policy analysts. Concurrent sessions included: Employment Law, Medicare and State Health Benefits Updates, Optional Life Insurance Administration, Employment Dispute Resolution Services, Worker's Compensation Law, VSDP, and an update of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

On August 12, JMU hosted a one day conference of all public higher education Chief Human Resources Officers. The group referred to as CHROC (Chief Human Resources Officers Council) discussed current and proposed legislation, the impact of current and pending DHRM policies, and ways to improve services through collaboration and cooperation. At this meeting, the training directors/managers from each of the universities also attended to share programs and ideas that are in place at their respective universities. The group meets at least 2 times per year.

Attended the Governor's Public Service Week awards luncheon to serve as an ambassador representing state employees to congratulate the winners.

Attended the Chief Human Resources Officers Council and Compensation Managers meeting. This group is comprised of all chief Human Resources Officers from public higher education institutions within the Commonwealth. A special compensation break-out session in the afternoon provided an opportunity for compensation managers to discuss and share effective compensation practices.

October 25-28, 2005: Steve Hedrick, Wanda Layman, Chris Ruddle, Krystal Smith
The 2005 HR leadership conference provided a learning opportunity as well as networking opportunity with hundreds of professionals from different agencies. Concurrent training sessions were held each day during the conference on different topics from HR Policy updates, workers' compensation, Medicare Part D, COBRA, and employment law updates.

Attended a meeting sponsored by DHRM to discuss data entry of Written Notices into the central database, PMIS. DHRM is capturing this information and any associated disciplinary and salary actions in order to track any disparate impact with the EEO Assessment reporting tool. Capturing this information is set to begin July 1, 2005.

Presented Leadership Training You Can Afford...When You Can't Afford Bad Leadership at the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources Southern Region Conference, Mobile, AL.

The 2004 HR Leadership Conference provided a learning opportunity as well as the chance to network with hundreds of professionals from different agencies. Concurrent training sessions were held each day during the conference for 41 different topics from HR Policy Updates, COVA Health Insurance Updates, COBRA, Worker's Compensation, Employment Law Updates to Job & Salary Structures.

Attended Policy Seminar Session as part of the 2004 DHRM Conference. Received information on a number of changes to policies affecting employees. Also received information regarding a new benefit to state employees to be rolled out in Spring 2005 called the PERKS card.

Attended the Chief Human Resources Officers Council. This group is comprised of all chief Human Resources Officers from public higher education institutions within the Commonwealth.

October 6-8, 2004: Keri Sue Brunk, James Robinson, and Cathy Thomas
Their theme was "Going for the Gold". Their intent was to entertain and educate their guests in "Olympic Style". There were 6 topic tracks with 40 concurrent sessions and 4 keynote addresses.

Currriculum subcommittee met. Core courses were identified and time allotments were recommended for each course. Some courses were placed in Level II and these were also estimated for time. Agency specific topics were designated and discussion on templates for agency use.

Statewide Training and Development Council met at the DMV Headquarters. An overview of the breakdown of two committees was given. The Who, What, Why, When and How components of the policy committee work was reviewed. The Core Curriculum Sub-Committee findings were also presented, including both core courses, level II courses and agency specific courses for the curriculum. A second meeting was planned for 8/26. Committee members were asked to identify outcomes/objectives of the core curriculum for that meeting.

DHRM meeting with Rick Pugh, DHRM and Syd Raab, Attorney Generals Office to review the recent, changes to the 'white collar' exemption tests of the FLSA and how it may affect classified and Faculty positions.

Teleconference meeting with other Commonwealth Higher Education Agencies to discuss how the changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) may affect Graduate Assistants and Assistant Coaches.

TIAA representative meeting. I met with Larry Chadwick from TIAA in Charlottesville to talk about setting up monthly individual counseling sessions for employees in TIAA ORP or 403(b) plans.

VA Sickness and Disability Plan. Learn what UNUM has been doing since they took over the VSDP and voice your agency concerns about the program so that UNUM knows how they best can help VSDP agency administrators.

VRS and Fidelity. Get to know Fidelity representatives since they are one of our two Optional Retirement providers.

Legislative Update with DHRM, VRS and Employee Relations Counselors. Info regarding legislation that will affect state employees.

Meeting sponsored by TIAA-CREF and Kaufman and Canoles, Benefits Attorneys, regarding retirement, the highly compensated and the IRS ruling regarding the 30 day break in service for retirees. This mainly affects JMU employees because of retiring and returning to JMU as part-time employees.
