JMU’s Newest Policy
JMU Policy 1406 Reporting Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect has just been approved by the president and will soon be listed on the Policy Committee’s website.
The purpose of JMU Policy 1406 is not only to comply with relevant state laws related to the mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect, but to recognize the responsibility of the university to provide a safe environment for children. The policy provides a definition of an abused or neglected child and states any university employee, who in their official or professional capacity, has reason to suspect that a child is an abused or neglected child, is required to report the matter as soon as possible, but not longer than 24 hours after having reason to suspect a reportable offense of child abuse or neglect.
For further clarification on this policy, as well as the recently revised JMU Policy 1324 Discrimination and Harassment, plan to attend one of the upcoming informational sessions, Lessons from Penn State. Session dates for 2013 will be available soon.
Test your Onboard Knowledge
Question: It is important to complete the Onboard Form in a timely manner because:
A. Having an employee start work before they are onboarded may put the university at risk for being out of compliance with federal regulations
B. Processing of the hire/rehire PARs cannot occur until the employee is cleared through Onboard
C. Allowing time for the employee to complete his/her paperwork enables the employee to be cleared to work by the desired start date
D. All of the above
E. None of the above
The correct answer is D. It is important to complete the Onboard Form in a timely manner because it helps keep JMU in compliance with federal regulations and audits by ensuring that I-9’s are completed on or before the employee’s first day of work. When an Onboard Form is submitted in a timely manner, the employee will be able complete his/her paperwork before the desired start date. This ensures that once the PAR is received, it can be immediately processed and the employee will have system access as soon as possible.
