Most medical plans do not cover long-term care services. Long-term care includes a wide range of supportive, medical, personal and social services for people who need assistance.  Anyone at any age may need these services. Needs may arise at any time due to an injury, illness or the effects of the natural aging process. Long-term care insurance provides help with usual activities of daily living such as dressing and walking, often called custodial care. Services can be provided in the form of home care, assisted living facilities, adult day care or nursing facilities.

Virginia Retirement System (VRS) has contracted with Genworth Life Insurance Company as the insurer for the program. Coverage provides a monthly benefit allowance for covered long-term care expenses.

Employees enrolled in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP) will receive a $96 daily benefit allowance in addition to any long-term care insurance purchased through Genworth Life Insurance Company.
