Registration

registration

Honors students with fewer than 75 JMU credits are permitted to register for classes earlier in the registration period than most other students with the same number of credits earned. Except for entering honors scholars, who register during the summer, honors students register for classes during the first few days of the fall and spring registration periods. As the time for registration approaches, the Office of Registration posts each student’s registration appointment time and the window (usually 48 hours) during which the student may register. This information is accessible through E-Campus on the Registrar’s home page

All honors students are identified in the PeopleSoft Student Administration system (E-Campus) and are admitted to honors courses and seminars on a first-come first-served basis. As a general rule, no overrides or permission numbers are required. If an override is required, the student should see the Honors Program secretary.

Honors students receive by e-mail attachment from the Honors Office a list of honors courses and seminars offered in the coming semester. The list is also posted on the Honors web page. All honors courses and seminars are also listed in the university's Schedule of Classes, available through E-Campus and in printed form. Honors courses appear in the alphabetically arranged department, program, or general education listings similar to the following examples:

   14504      GENG   236H      Surv Eng Lit Honors       1       3     Keezell G003      MWF    11:15-12:05     Bankert, D.

Honors seminars are listed in the university's Schedule of Classes under HONORS similar to the following example:

   11605      HON      300M      Women in Science         1       3     Jackson 0002     M          03:00-05:45     Wylie, M. L.

If there are questions about scheduling or requirements, students should make an advising appointment with their assigned faculty adviser, the honors liaison adviser in their department, or the director or assistant director of the Honors Program prior to registration.

Students may make adjustments to their schedules according to the schedule provided in the Schedule of Classes, up to and including the university add/drop periods.

Registration: Special Situations

Honors Options

After registration, students planning to exercise the honors option in any non-honors upper level (200 or above) course should obtain an honors option application form,   meet with the appropriate professor, negotiate the option contract, complete the required form and return it promptly to the Honors Office.  It is wise to complete this negotiation as early as possible.  The completed form is due in the Honors Office no later than the end of the second week of the semester in which the option is to be completed. For additional information, see Honors Option

Students should take great care not to overburden the professor with too much extra work or with an unreasonable commitment of after-class time. Students should also make wise decisions about the option requirements as they relate to their own semester's workload.

Students Studying Abroad

Registration for honors students studying abroad is handled through the Office of International Education (x6419). This procedure holds for both students preparing to study abroad and those students already in a foreign country.

Completing Proposal for HON 300S Honors Abroad Seminar

To complete registration for the Honors Abroad Seminar, students should first contact the Honors Program Office to obtain the names of honors students already registered for the seminar or those who might wish to add the seminar. Three students are required for the seminar to be offered. All participants, however, need not be honors students nor study at the same foreign location, but each must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.

Once participants have been identified, they should meet with each other and the director of the Honors Program to draw up a proposal for their seminar topic and project.  The proposal is to be submitted jointly, but each participant must secure from the Honors Office, complete and return an HON 300S Proposal form [Duane—link to form].  These forms and a copy of the proposal must be approved by the director of the Honors Program before the students' departure for foreign study. Careful adherence to this procedure is particularly important to ensure that students receive proper credit for their work when they return to campus.
