Honors Abroad

Studying abroad can be one of the most exciting learning experiences in a student's life. It is the kind of education the Honors Program encourages among its students. An Honors Abroad program has been designed to give honors students sufficient flexibility to integrate studies abroad into other aspects of the Honors Program. Honors students planning to study abroad in their sophomore or junior year should apply at least a semester in advance. They may obtain honors credit while abroad through HON 300S Honors Abroad Seminar. The Honors Program recommends that students schedule their semester abroad during the sophomore year or first semester of the junior year.

The Honors Abroad Seminar is available to honors students while abroad. At least three students are needed to constitute an Honors Abroad Seminar. The topic and procedure of the seminar are developed by the interested students in consultation with the director of the Honors Program and with the cooperation of the faculty member-in-residence. The seminar provides an opportunity to pursue special research, formulate ideas for a senior project and possibly work with foreign experts not directly associated with the JMU program.

The Honors Program offers a limited number of scholarships to honors students in the Studies Abroad Program.
