All honors scholars and subject-area honors students must complete a specific number of hours in honors courses for graduation in honors. The required honors hours do not supplant any required hours in general education or the major. Many honors courses, however, will count toward general education requirements as well as toward the honors total. Other honors courses may also count toward requirements in a student's major. Unless a student opts to take many extra hours in honors, the following courses of study can be completed in a normal four-year sequence.
Honors courses are those designated by the H extension (e.g., POSC 320H). Honors electives may be chosen from among honors courses, honors seminars, and honors options. Course components of the senior honors project are explained elsewhere in this site.
All honors students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.
Honors Scholars
Core (honors) requirements 9 credits
At least 9 honors credits within the general education program
Honors Seminars (2 courses) 6 credits
Honors Electives (2 courses) 6 credits
Senior Honors Project (3 courses) 6 credits
Total 27 credits
In their first year, most honors scholars take two honors courses each semester. Completing the core requirements should be a primary goal. In the second and third years, scholars should complete their honors seminars and electives requirements. In the third year, usually in the spring, they should also begin their senior honors project, submitting the project proposal (form available in the Honors Office) and completing the 499A one-credit course. The final year should be devoted to completing the remaining 5 credits of the senior honors project. All honors requirements must be completed before the student participates in a commencement program.
To remain in the Honors Program, honors scholars must enroll in at least one honors course, seminar, honors option or senior honors project each semester until all honors requirements are completed. Any exception must have the prior approval of the director of the Honors Program.
Subject-Area Honors
Honors seminars (2 courses) 6 credits
Honors electives (4 courses) 12 credits
Senior honors project (3 courses) 6 credits
Total 24 credits
Subject-area honors students, who enter the Honors Program in their second, third, or fourth semester of university work, should begin taking honors courses as soon as possible, selecting at least two seminars and completing their honors electives with additional seminars, honors courses or honors options. Subject-area students should especially consider using the honors option in courses in their major field of study. These students must also begin their senior honors project in their junior year, usually in the spring, completing and submitting the project proposal (form available in the Honors Office) and the 499A one-credit course. All honors requirements must be completed before the student participates in a commencement program.
