Starting in the fall 2017 semester, a fee of $150 per semester will be assessed to every Honors College student in good standing or actively enrolled in an honors class. This fee structure will better enable the JMU Honors College to provide the level of curricular and co-curricular enhancements needed for the future. It will also enhance our ability to provide new and innovative programs moving forward.

This fee will be assessed at the beginning of each fall and spring semester and will be paid at the same time as tuition and other JMU fees. It will be the same amount for students at all levels within the Honors College. Some examples of fee expenditures may include:

  • Curricular and signature program support
  • Grants for undergraduate research, internships or creative projects
  • Honors travel abroad opportunities
  • Travel to honors and select academic conferences
  • A limited number of needs-based Honors fee waivers
  • Meaningful on- and off-campus retreats and other special events in the Honors College

It is anticipated that the fee will be used in a variety of ways within a given year and may change from year to year.

To ensure oversight and transparency in the use of funds collected by this student fee, a Honors College Faculty Advisory Committee will advise the Dean of the Honors College in the use and prioritization of expenditure from this source. A student consultative committee consisting of the Executive Committee and Chairs of the Madison Honors Leadership Council will also advise the Dean in the use of these funds. An annual summary report of all expenditures from these funds will be made available to all honors students upon request.
