Dr. Paula Maxwell joined the JMU faculty as the Athletic Training Program Director in August of 2006. Prior to coming to JMU, Dr. Maxwell served as the Athletic Training Education Program Director at the University at Buffalo from 2000-2006 where she developed an entry-level graduate athletic training program.
Dr. Maxwell is a native of the Adirondack region of New York State. She received her B.S. degree from Houghton College (NY), her M.S. degree from Indiana State University, and her Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo. She has been an athletic trainer since 1987 with clinical experience in various settings including high school and NCAA Div I and III and NAIA collegiate settings. Prior to working at the University at Buffalo, Dr. Maxwell served for 13 years at Houghton College, nine of which were as the Head Athletic Trainer and Athletic Training Program Director, and one year as Department Chair.
Dr. Maxwell's research interests are two-fold: 1) exercise-induced asthma with specific attention given to the role that dehydration plays in exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and 2) the development of web-based teaching and learning tools specific to athletic training.
Professionally, Dr. Maxwell is a member of the CAATE Commission and acts as the liaison to the CAATE Review Committee.
Dr. Maxwell resides in Harrisonburg and is proud to be able to work with JMU's Athletic Training Education Program.
