John joined the JMU staff in 2003 and brought the experience of being both a head athletic trainer and working in numerous professional settings. His primary responsibility will be the head athletic trainer for the men's basketball program. He will also be teaching within JMU's CAAHEP accredited athletic training curriculum. In addition, John currently serves as a column editor for the Journal of Athletic Therapy Today.
Prior to coming to JMU, John spent two years at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. While at Fairfield, he was the head athletic trainer for both the Stags' football and women's basketball programs. Also during this time, he was an approved clinical instructor for both Sacred Heart University and Salisbury University athletic training students.
John was the head athletic trainer for Fredonia State University in Fredonia, N.Y. from 1998-2001. At Fredonia State, John was responsible for coordinating sports medicine services for 19 Division III intercollegiate athletic teams as well as teaching within Fredonia's athletic coaching minor. He also worked with the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League while at Fredonia, working two mini-camps and one pre-season training camp.
John's first job was at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. During his two years at SMS, John was the head athletic trainer for the SMS men's and women's soccer, tennis, and golf programs. He was also an assistant athletic trainer for the SMS football program.
John earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a concentration in athletic training from Salisbury University in 1994. While a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Clarion University in Pennsylvania, he earned his master of science degree in rehabilitation science in 1996. John and his wife Angela reside in Harrisonburg.
