A student run, non-profit organization whose mission is to create a safer community for the city of Harrisonburg. Members work to prevent drunk driving by educating JMU students, fundraising to help support their mission, and providing free rides home for JMU students.
A bimonthly newsletter distributed to bathroom stalls around the JMU campus in order to educate students, increase their interest in various topics in health, and amplify their interest in living a healthy lifestyle.
Serves as a coalition of community members dedicated to the reduction of underage drinking and alcohol abuse. The coalition strives to identify problem areas and seek solutions by gaining input from residents and the student population.
The JMU Alcohol Advisory Committee will recommend and monitor a comprehensive strategic plan for substance abuse prevention. By identifying key issues that should be of institutional priority, this team will consider effective ways to promote short and long-term programs that minimize drinking and substance abuse among students.
Officers in the Crime Prevention Unit speak with student groups upon request and participate in health and wellness fairs.
A required assignment for all students enrolled in GHTH 100 Personal Wellness. This assignment provides students with an added opportunity to experience a variety of health and wellness activities, services, and programs that are available at James Madison University.
Student substance use, attitude and behavior data is reviewed annually and bi-annually through the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey, the Continuing Student Survey, the Freshmen Survey, the National Association of College Health Administrators (NACHA) Survey and assessment data through General Education, Cluster Five. Archival records from campus and community departments are also used in data review.
Every JMU student must take a General Education/Cluster Five/Wellness domain course. There are three courses offered in this domain: General Health (GHTH) 100 Personal Wellness; General Kinesiology (GKIN) 100 Lifetime Fitness and Wellness and General Education Individual in the Community (GEIC) 101. In these courses students are exposed to a variety of health and wellness activities, services and programs.
