Substance Abuse Counseling

The Counseling and Student Development Center provides services to help students make healthy choices and reduce the risk of harm caused by excessive drinking or illegal drug use. Services include individual counseling, a work group and assessments.

Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS)

BASICS is a service available for students who want to consider changing or reducing their substance use. BASICS is non-confrontational, non-judgmental, non-authoritarian and non-labeling intervention. BASICS is comprised of 2 50-minute interview sessions. Students who have violated the JMU alcohol policy may be required to attend a 2 session BASICS intervention.

Educational Sanctioning

When a student is charged with a campus policy or law violation within the surrounding community, s/he may receive an educational sanction. The Office of Judicial Affairs provides three levels of alcohol and other drug sanctioned programs. Each program’s content level increases, based on the severity of a student’s substance abuse, their policy violation, and their policy violation history.

Alcohol Roundtables

The Office of Residence Life provides alcohol roundtables to on-campus students that provide interactive discussion about alcohol abuse and its effect on the community, specifically within the residence hall.
