Help A Smoker Kick The Habit

If you are a non-smoker, you are probably proud of your lifestyle choice. You may feel compelled to help others dislike smoking. When dealing with smokers that may not be the most welcoming approach.

For smokers to quit once and for all, THEY need to decide to quit for THEMSELVES without peer pressure. Once smokers decide to quit, they will need your help and support. But before they make that decision, your help may not be needed or wanted.

Helpful Information

Smoking is a behavior. Continue to care about smokers regardless of their smoking cessation decision.

Understand the personal importance of smoking. Smoking is often a cherished part of a smoker's life and often a way to deal with stress. Quitting would be like losing a friend.

Smoking is a strong physical and psychological addiction. Health risks of smoking are easily overlooked when faced with addiction. This is what quitting is about, not a simple "change in willpower."

Refrain from telling smokers what to do. Encourage them to make the choice for themselves. It is only up to them.

Encourage healthy nutrition decisions. Eating healthy motivates and creates positive habits.

Be courteous and appropriate when asking a smoker not to smoke while you are near. Your car, home, office, restaurants are sage areas. Be non-judgmental when asking.

Helpful Support

Take smokers aside to tell them how much you care for them and your concerns about their health. Once smokers state their interest in quitting, have confidence in them and tell them so. Consider giving up something yourself. Candy, dessert, soda, coffee are prime examples that are probably a constant part of your life.
