Physical &psychological Complications
General:
- irregular heartbeat, cardiac arrest
- kidney damage
- liver damage
- destruction of teeth, rupture of esophagus
- disruption of menstrual cycle, infertility
- weakened immune system
- icy hands and feet
- swollen glands in neck, stones in salivary duct, "chipmunk cheeks"
- excess hair on face, arms, and body
- dry, blotchy skin with yellow or gray tone
- malnutrition, disruption of body's fluid, mineral imbalance
- fainting spells, sleep problems, poor concentration
- permanent loss of bone mass, hairline fractures causing permanent damage
- depression that may lead to suicide
- feelings of being out of control and helpless
- anxiety, irrational thoughts
- guilt and shame
- feeling terrified of others finding out about the disorder
- obsessive thoughts
- compulsive behaviors and rituals
- feelings of alienation and loneliness
Over-exercising:
- slowed metabolism
- dehydration
- stress fractures
- degenerative arthritis
- for women, amenorrhea (less than 3 periods a year) which causes a depletion of female hormones. This effects the metabolism of calcium and can ultimately cause osteoporosis
- depressed thyroid activity
- irregular sleep patterns
- loss of ability to concentrate
- may start to burn healthy lean muscle mass tissue for energy, this decreases your ability to maintain physical activity
