ALLERGY INJECTION PATIENT POLICY
1. All students receiving allergy injections are required to make an initial consult appointment with a nurse before injections are given. Please call 540.568.2978 for an appointment.
2. If you are just starting allergy injections, you should receive the first one from your allergist.
3. You are responsible for having current instructions, schedules, and allergens at the Health Center. You are also responsible for adhering to your schedule (being off-schedule can increase your time spent in the allergy clinic).
4. You will be notified when the allergen is low. The Health Center can reorder serum; however you will be responsible for any mailing cost and any referral requirements for insurance.
5. You will be responsible for keeping the Allergy Clinic staff abreast of any changes in address, phone number, health conditions or allergy information.
6. Vials left unused at the Health Center will be discarded after the expiration date.
7. For your safety, allergy injections are not given without a physician's presence in the Health Center.
8. Allergy injection clinic hours are available by appointment Monday through Friday 8-11a.m. and 1-4p.m. There are no walk-in allergy appointments.
9. No matter what your previous experience with allergy injections has been, a 30-minute wait the Health Center is mandatory due to the possibility of a serious reation. You must have injection sites checked by a nurse before you leave. We cannot continue giving injections to students who refuse to wait or be checked. There are no exceptions.
10. Notify the nurse during your waiting period if you experience any of the following symptoms: swelling or itching at injection site, wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, hives, facial swelling, "pins and needles" sensations of skin, flushing, runny nose, nasal congestion, or sneezing.
11. Delayed reations are possible. If you have any of the above symptoms after you have received allergy injections and left the Health Center, take an antihistamine (Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin or Benadryl). If symptoms continue or worsen, return to the Health Center or go to the Emergency Department at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Report this to the nurse BEFORE receiving any additional injections.
12. You should wait 48 hours before and after allergy injections to receive any other type of immunizations such as Flu vaccine.
13. Avoid vigorous exercise (jogging, gym workouts, etc.) at least one hour, preferably two, before and after injections.
14. Please refer to the
Fee Schedule for allergy injections. Fees may be paid by cash, check or Flex at each visit. The Health Center does NOT bill insurance; however upon request an itemized statement for reimbursement is available at the end of each semester.
