Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS)
What is BASICS?
BASICS, Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students, is a program designed to help students evaluate the risks that come from abusing alcohol. While the program helps with early intervention, it is not a rehabilitation program. BASICS is an empathetic, confidential, non-judgmental, non-confrontational program, and open to all JMU students.
Looking for a Change?
While in college, some students may drink alcohol heavily and/or have negative consequences that result from alcohol use. If you are a student that wants to consider changing or reducing their alcohol use, BASICS may be program for you.
BASICS can also help students that are:
- Referred by administrators, faculty/staff, coaches, or friends
- Mandated by Judicial Affairs for a JMU alcohol policy violation
- Court-mandated to complete substance abuse prevention hours
To discuss the appropriateness and scheduling of BASICS for yourself or for a student, please contact Tia Mann (BASICS Prevention Specialist) at manntl@jmu.edu or 540-568-5501.
