Education and Clinical Training:

Barbara received her bachelor of science in nursing in 1981 and her master of science in nursing in 1991, both from the Medical College of Virginia (VCU).


Certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) since 1991

Professional Experience:

As a registered nurse, Barbara worked at the Medical College of Virginia from 1981-1991 in the areas of Oncology/Neurology, Emergency Room, Cardiac Surgery ICU and Cardiac Transplant Team. In 1991 she worked at the Radford University Student Health Center, then was employed at the Virginia Tech Student Health Center from 1992-1994. She worked part-time at the Mary Baldwin College Student Health Center from 1998-2002. Barbara joined the staff at the James Madison University Health Center in 1999.

In addition to this experience, she is a member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners (VCNP), a past President of the VCNP Shenandoah Region and a past Membership Chair for the State VCNP and Shenandoah Region.

What she enjoys most about working in college health:

“I enjoy working with college students to provide care and education to help them be well and stay well so they can do well at JMU and in life.”
