Special Education - M.A.T.



Application Deadline

Priority review of applications begins March 1 for *K-12 and *Early Childhood Special Education. Completed applications should be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the fall semester.

*Prerequisite courses as determined by the graduate program director should be taken in the summer prior to fall start date.

Visual Impairments accepts applications on a rolling basis. Completed applications should be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the student intends to enroll.

Transcripts of all previous academic work at the undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) level. 
Applicants must upload unofficial copies of their transcripts and if admitted, all transcripts will be verified by the Graduate School. Applicants who previously attended James Madison University still need to upload an unofficial transcript, but do not need to provide official transcripts for verification.


Required by Program

  • Professional resume
  • Two-to-three page written statement
  • Two Letters of Recommendation (one from an individual who can speak of your potential as a graduate student and another who can comment on your professional dispositions.)
  • Teacher candidates must also apply for, and be admitted toTeacher Education at JMU.
All of the above listed requirements can/should be uploaded within the online application, and test scores should be sent electronically to the Graduate School from the Educational Testing Service.
