Application Deadline

The Secondary Education program accepts applications on a rolling basis. Completed applications should be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the student intends to enroll.

International applicants will upload a credential evaluation of their non-U.S. college or university transcripts from one of the services listed at this link: Credential_Evaluation

Required Tests

The test requirements for post-baccalaureate MAT applicants are:

  • A Virginia passing score on the Praxis Subject Assessment for candidate’s intended licensure area
  • A passing score on the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA).

Candidates completing their undergraduate degree and the Secondary Education pre-professional minor program at JMU must submit a Virginia passing score on the Praxis Subject Assessment to the JMU Education Support Center prior to beginning more than 12 hours of MAT graduate course work.

Transcripts of all previous academic work at the undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) level. 
Applicants must upload unofficial copies of their transcripts and if admitted, all transcripts will be verified by the Graduate School. Applicants who previously attended James Madison University still need to upload an unofficial transcript, but do not need to provide official transcripts for verification.

Required by Program

Current JMU undergraduate applicants, as well as post baccalaureate applicants, must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or above.

Post-baccalaureate candidates must submit additional admission requirements which are to be mailed directly to the James Madison University Department of Middle, Secondary, and Mathematics Education to include:

  • A resume
  • Two letters of reference (one of which must be an academic reference)
