Application Deadline

The 5th Year MAT, Concentration in Middle Grades Education, will sunset in May 2023.  Applications to the 5th Year MAT, Concentration in Middle Grades Education, are open only for current JMU students completing their major in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies (IdLS) with a minor in pre-professional Middle Grades Education.  No new applications will be considered after May 2022.

Completed applications should be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the student intends to enroll.

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions should be uploaded with your electronic application and may be used for departmental admission review purposes. If offered admission, you will be directed and required to submit to the JMU Graduate School an official transcript from any institution other than JMU from which a degree has been awarded to finalize your admission. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent to JMU directly from the issuing institution.

Required by Program

Current JMU undergraduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or above.

No letter of recommendation is required. Two professional references will be solicited by the Educational Support Center later in the Teacher Education application process. References must know the candidate for at least 6 months in a professional capacity.

Test Requirements

Current JMU candidates completing their undergraduate degree with a major in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies and the Middle Education pre-professional minor program must submit Virginia Praxis Subject Assessment passing scores on their two Middle Education content areas prior to beginning more than 12 hours of graduate course work in the Middle Education Master of Arts in Teaching 5th year format graduate program. However, applicants must submit passing Praxis Subject Assessment scores for at least one of their content areas prior to beginning more than 6 hours of MAT graduate course work.
