Graduate Education at JMU

The year 2004 marked the 50th anniversary of graduate education at JMU!

The JMU Graduate School was established in 1954 when the State Board of Education authorized the university to offer programs leading to the Master of Science in Education degree. In 1994, JMU was authorized to offer programs leading to doctoral degrees. JMU graduate programs have continued to grow steadily. Currently, JMU is authorized to offer graduate programs leading to masters, education specialists, doctor of philosophy, doctor of audiology, doctor of musical arts, and doctor of psychology degrees. Developing "Graduate Programs of Distinction" is one of the JMU's top six strategic goals of emphasis. Graduate education is becoming an increasingly important aspect of JMU's overall vision.
