HONOR CODE NOTICE: All incoming JMU students, including graduate students, are required to watch a web-video containing information about the JMU Honor Code. Students must then take a web-based test on the material at their convenience from any location. The test must be completed by the end of the student's first semester at JMU. News from CSD! 

Dr. Stacey Pavelko and Dr. Carol Dudding have recently been awarded a $9,471 grant award for Language Sampling and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) for Speech-Language Pathologists by the Virginia Department of Education. Congratulations on this award!

Dr. Christy Ludlow has been appointed as Chairperson of the Motor Function, Speech and Rehabilitation Study Section for the Center for Scientific Review beginning July 1st, 2013 until June 30th, 2015. This position requires high competence and achievement in the researcher’s scientific discipline and members are selected based on quality of research, publications in scientific journals, and other significant activities, achievements, and honors. Dr. Ludlow’s participation helps assure the quality of the National Institute of Health (NIH) peer review process and is a highly esteemed position. Congratulations to Dr. Christy Ludlow!

Format workshops for students who are completing a thesis or dissertation have been scheduled for March and April. On campus sessions will be held in Grace Street House conference room on the following: 

  • Monday, March 25, 4:30-6 pm
  • Friday, April 5, 1-3 pm
  • Monday, April 8, 10-12 am
  • Tuesday, April 9, 3-5 pm
  • Thursday, April 11, 1-3 pm

An online session via Collaborate will be held Tuesday, April 16 from 4 - 5:30.  The session will be set up through the Thesis and Dissertation blackboard site. If you have submitted all the necessary paperwork related to thesis or dissertation then you are a student in the Thesis and Dissertation blackboard site. If you are not a student in the site, please contact Laura Ryman, rymanle@jmu.edu, to complete the necessary arrangements.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA), and on its behalf, IMPAQ International, is pleased to announce the 2012 ETA Research Papers Program to fund the research of eight to ten doctoral students. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding Changing Labor Markets
  • Identifying Effective Strategies
  • Improving Workforce System Infrastructure
  • Addressing the Needs of Special Populations
  • Building Research Infrastructure and Support

Prospective applicants are encouraged to view the ETA Research Papers Program website at http://www.ETAResearchPapersProgram.IMPAQINT.com. This website contains important details on application procedures and other useful information about the 2012 ETA Research Papers Program. ETA plans to award $80,000 across the eight to ten successful applicants. The application deadline is March 15, 2013.

Successful applicants will demonstrate the following:

  • Methodological soundness and sophistication of the proposed research project that will add to the literature on evidence-based policy
  • Policy relevant research questions and topic areas
  • A sound work plan including identification and involvement of an academic advisor
  • A record of academic accomplishment and demonstrated research aptitude.

Jason Kopp, will complete a third-year internship at The College Board when he moves to New York City to work in the College Board’s Manhattan office. Jason’s internship will take place from August 2013 to May 2014. Jason is the 5th Assessment & Measurement doctoral student to be awarded The College Board academic year internship; others have included Pamela Kaliski, Carol Barry, Megan France, Chris Coleman and Becca Marsh. Congratulations Jason!

 Ross Markle (Ph.D., 2010), Associate Research Scientist at the Educational Testing Service's Center for Academic and Workforce Readiness and Success, will return to the JMU campus to give a talk on his work with ETS. He will be speaking on February 15 at the Center for Assessment and Research Studies on Noncognitive Factors and Student Success: A Journey of Theory, Measurement, and Applied Research. Over the past several years, the Center for Academic and Workforce Readiness at ETS has been researching and developing noncognitive assessments to improve student success in higher education. This talk will briefly review the large scope of this project, which includes assessment development, implementing a national field trial, advanced measurement and psychometric research applications, and initial results. For new and developing researchers, this talk will explore many potential applications of assessment and measurement skills in a high-profile, applied project. For faculty and staff, this talk will introduce a new and innovative assessment that is designed to impact student success. Lastly, the conversation will move to future plans for this work, including potential collaborations and expansions. Dr. Markle is one of, now, 35 graduates who have earned their Ph.D. through JMU's doctoral program in assessment and measurement.
