Paul Gooden
Paul Gooden
Camp Director
Under the direction of head coach Paul Gooden, the James Madison University men's golf program has become a top squad in the NCAA District II and a fixture in post season competition. Gooden has directed the Dukes to the NCAA East Region Championships in 5 of his 6 seasons as head coach, with the 1998 squad attaining the school's best ever performance at the event. Gooden has been honored twice as the Virginia Coach of the Year and was named the District II Coach of the Year once. He earned the state honor after his inaugural season in 1995-96, in which JMU came away with six team championships. Gooden received both state and district coach of the year honors in 1997-98, when he guided the team to three team titles and a 64-4 (.941) head-to-head record over the 1997 fall season. Gooden is also coaching JMU's women's team for the third year. Already, the women's team has broken all of the JMU records and they are working hard to achieve a spot in the NCAA field.

Gooden has been actively involved in the port of golf throughout the Shenandoah Valley for more than 20 years. He worked as the head golf professional at the Country Club of Stanton (Va.) from 1977 to 1998 and previously served as the Vice President and tournament director of the southern Chapter of the Middle Atlantic Professional Golf Association. Gooden is also a former member of the Middle Atlantic PGA Board of Directors and a strong proponent of the junior circuit who received the PGA's "Junior Golf Leader Award" in 1988 and 1992.

As a player, Gooden has competed in the 1990 Kemper Open, the 1988 Anheiser-Busch Golf Classic, the Nike Dominion Open in 1993 and 1994, and qualified for the National Club Professional Championships three times (1979, 1982, 1983). More recently, Gooden placed sixth at the 1997 Mid-Atlantic PGA Championship and tied for eight at the 1994 Virginia Beach Open. He has also amassed a number of Mid-Atlantic PGA tournament victories throughout his playing career.
