International Student Orientation Program

While the content found on this page is meant to give you an overview of what to expect, you need to register by login in to the ISSS portal. The link to the portal is found in the Introduction tab. 

Sunday, Aug. 21 [Check-in and Move-in Day]

Check-in at Memorial Hall (directions at the bottom of page):  11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

  • Pick up your Transition materials which includes the Transitions schedule, campus map, and other information.   
  • Sign up for shopping trips to Walmart to purchase essentials, such as linens (transportation provided). 
  • Learn about times and location for lunch and dinner (provided free of cost for students). 
  • Submit any outstanding forms, such as immunization forms.
  • For those living on campus, pick up temporary access card to enter your assigned residence hall so you can check into your room.
  • Meet the LINKers (the international orientation team) and International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) staff
  • Get answers to your initial questions and concerns from LINKers and ISSS staff. 

Move-in:  On Campus Residence Halls (12:00– 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 – 10:00 p.m.)

  • You will only be able to move into your assigned residence hall during 12 p.m. through 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. through 10 p.m. You will enter your assigned residence hall (with your temporary access card) and then obtain the key to your room from the residence hall staff (R.A.) on duty.
  • Transportation from Memorial Hall (Check In) to Residence Halls will be provided, as needed.   

Move-in:  Off Campus Locations (as pre-arranged by you)

  • Be sure to pre-arrange your move in time and date with your off campus housing provider.  
  • We will provide Transportation to off campus housing locations, as needed. 

Monday, Aug. 22 - Wednesday, Aug. 24 [International Orientation Days]

Monday (8:30am – 9:00pm)
  • Parent Session
  • Campus Tour
  • Shopping trip
  • Immigration Session
  • Game Night & Dinner

Tuesday (8:30am – 7:00pm)

  • Information sessions (housing, transportation, safety)
  • Opening a bank account
  • Small group discussions with orientation leaders
  • Academic session
  • Welcome Picnic

Wednesday (8:30am – 12:00pm)

  • Trip to the bank
  • General Q&A session

Driving Directions:

  • On I-81, take EXIT 245 - Port Republic Rd/ VA-253.
  • Turn West onto Port Republic Rd/VA-253 (You will pass by the main entrance to the JMU campus). 
  • At the intersection of Port Republic and South Main St. continue straight (the street will become Maryland Ave.).
  • At the next traffic light (the Maryland Ave. & South High St/Route 42) turn right on to Route 42 South/High Street.
  • Turn left at the second traffic light. You will see the sign for Memorial Hall on your left.
  • Follow the Transitions signs which will lead you to the proper parking lot and entrance to the building.

  1. In case of complications or difficulties, please note that you can reach Thomas Lavenir on his office phone (540) 568-7314. When on campus, simply dial: 8-7314 from the emergency phone (in a box) located outside the residence hall.
