Hosting International Visiting Professors, Researchers or Short-Term Visitors

Visiting Professors or Short-Term Visitors

Departments occasionally host visiting international professors to teach courses on a temporary basis, participate in a residency, attend a training session, or as part of a faculty exchange program.  Any visiting professors whose activities will last longer than 9 days and are receiving any form of compensation will need to obtain a J-1 visa. Visiting professors are allowed to teach or give occasional lectures at other universities as well, but approval for this must be given first by the ISSS office.

If a Department is interested in bringing an international scholar to JMU under the J-1 visa sponsorship, a Request to Host J-1 Visa International Exchange Visitor must be completed and returned to International Student and Scholar Services, MSC 5731.

Research Scholars

International faculty whose main purpose of coming to JMU is to perform research are considered to be research scholars. Research scholars coming to JMU for a period longer than 9 days will need to obtain a J-1 visa. Research scholars must have obtained at least a bachelor’s degree and are permitted to conduct research, and deliver occasional lectures at other universities as well, but permission must be given by the ISSS office first.

If a Department is interested in bringing an international scholar to JMU under the J-1 visa sponsorship, a Request to Host J-1 Visa International Exchange Visitor must be completed and returned to International Student and Scholar Services, MSC 5731.
