The Center for Global Engagement welcomed Pernell Whitfield, Jr. in January of 2017. A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Pernell is also a Double Duke of James Madison University! He received his undergraduate degree in Media Arts and Design and is currently finishing up his master’s in College Student Personnel Administration.

Pernell’s desire to pursue a career within international education resulted from his two experiences abroad as an undergraduate student at JMU. In 2012, he explored the world of British media in London; and in 2013, he studied the rich history and culture of Ghana. While in Ghana, he also had the opportunity teach math and literacy to students at GLONA academy, a non-profit organization that provides free education to students of Accra, Ghana. Connecting with these hardworking young students instilled the importance of cross-cultural experiences and that we all can learn from each other regardless of how different our cultures may be.

These transformative study abroad experiences stirred up a passion in Pernell to see others witness these type of global encounters. As a Study Abroad Advisor, Pernell gets to carry out his passion by advising students on study abroad programs and opportunities, managing the exchange program, and assisting with marketing efforts. Pernell is excited to be a part of the team and looks forward to connecting students to their desired experiences abroad.
