The idea for WordEvol comes from a DOS based computer program by Stephen Prata that accompanied his book Artifical Life Playhouse, 1993, Waite Group Publishing. The book is out of print but the idea of using a mutation/natural selection strategy to demonstrate how efficiently meaning can evolve from a meaningless string of random letters is very powerful and effective.
However, we wanted a more flexible Windows based interface that allowed us to do more than the DOS based version. So, Steve Baedke programmed WordEvolv in a Windows version, with design and documentation by Lynn Fichter.
