Mandelbrot Set

  • Download Mandelbrot by Cerious Software

  •      The Mandelbrot Program we use for demonstrations and labs we obtained years ago as a web download. Since then it has disappeared, and reappeared a couple of times. At the moment (February 2003) it is available as Careware (if you use and like the program donate 20 dollars to the Option Institute and Fellowship Son-Rise Program.) It is one of the more flexible and powerful programs available.
On the other hand, the Mandelbrot set is so well known and popular that lots of web sites are devoted to it, including some with Applet versions (you can zoom online), as well as downloadable versions, mostly shareware or freeware. The list below is a selection.

    Downloadable Versions
  • From Cerious
  • From Lightspeed
  • From James Gleick's book Chaos - Rudy Rucker wrote a series of programs to accompany Gleick's classic book. Today copyright has been released and anyone can download a copy from Rucker's home page; scroll down to the bottom to find it. Besides a nice Mandelbrot program, package also contains other programs, for example a pendulum program that is kind of slick.
  • Fracint
  • From Java Boutique - by Eckhard Roessel

  • Online Versions
  • The Mandelbrot Explorer - by Panagiotis Christias
  • University of Utah - very nice page with a slick applet
  • Julia and Mandelbrot Set Explorer - by David E. Joyce
  • The Interactive Mandelbrot Set
  • From Java Boutique - by Eckhard Roessel - same as downloadable one above, but works online too.

  • Links and Explorations of the Mandelbrot Set
  • Introduction to the Mandelbrot Set by David Dewey - nice introduction to the complex plain and how the set is generated.
  • Stony Brook University: Philosophy and Computers - lots of links to images, music, downloadable programs, etc.
  • Mathworld - mathematics behind Mandelbrot, with links to related sites.

See below left for online applets, versions you can download to your computer, and explorations of the math from simple to more complex.
