Music in General Culture - Through class discussion and guided listening, this course provides an examination of the historically important concepts, techniques and forms of the music of western culture. Particular attention is paid to the social and historical context in which compositions are created as well as the historical and formal connections to and relationships of music to other fine arts, such as painting, sculpture and architecture. The course also emphasizes listening to music critically, to discern the important elements of musical compositions and to develop an appreciation of music as art and an expressive aesthetic experience, not just as entertainment. The student should come away from the course with an understanding of what the arts, and especially music, contribute to the human experience and how we go about gaining that understanding.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain how music and culture are interrelated.
  • Recognize that music is accessible and relevant to their lives.
  • Demonstrate literacy (vocabulary, concepts, creative processes) in music.
  • Produce an informed response to the form, content, and aesthetic qualities of musical works.
  • Experience music events more discerningly.
  • Acknowledge relationships among the arts.
