As a course for non-majors, GART200's central purspoe is to make the images and ideas of historic to contemporary art expression accessible. The course content discusses a broad vision and highlights important developments of society as a whole, such as the dialogue surrounding the human condition and our impact on the world. The emphasis of art as a way to process ideas, react to injustice, reinforce propaganda, and other impulses allows students an entry point into the subtext of expression. Difficult and lesser known art is presented along with well-known works; the emphasis on art as a shorthand for ideas encourages students to see the reasons of the artwork's purpose, beyond an immediate "like" or "dislike" of the work itself. With that said, students are encouraged to express their opinions on such matters through discussion in class and reflective essays on specific art lectures and exhibitions.
