General Education Council - Responsibilities and Membership

The Human Community. Any changes to the goals or learning objectives of the program are made through a vote by the General Education Council. The Council receives recommendations from each Cluster Committee regarding specific curricular actions and is responsible for reviewing these recommendations to determine their appropriateness for meeting the objectives of the cluster, the “Guiding Principles,” and the overall goals of the program. The council then votes on each recommendation.

Curricular recommendations made by the General Education Council will be forwarded to the VPAA. Recommendations for significant modification to the general education program are submitted to the Committee on Academic Programs.

Changes to the curricular processes within the general education program are also made by a vote of the General Education Council, providing those changes are consistent with university policy.

In matters of policy and direction of the general education program, the General Education Council is advisory to the Dean of General Education and the Cluster Coordinators.

The General Education Council consists of the following members:

  • The Chair of the Council (non-voting, except in cases of tie votes).
  • General Education Program members would include the Dean, Associate Deans, the Technology Coordinator and the Cluster Coordinators (9 voting members).
  • Candidates for the positions of Cluster Committee Representatives and College Representatives be teaching faculty, at least 50% of whose duties are instructional, i.e., related primarily to the classroom and non-administrative functions.
  • Cluster Committee Representatives, each of whom would be a full time faculty member elected by their respective committees (5 voting members).
  • College Representatives, each of whom would be a full time faculty member elected by their respective College Faculty or College Council (6 voting members).
  • University Representatives would include one representative from each of those areas currently included (e.g. Faculty Senate Liaison, the Library, CARS, Academic Advising & Career Development, and the Student Affairs Division). The Faculty Senate Liaison, the Library, CARS, and Academic Advising & Career Development representatives would be voting members; the Student Affairs Division representative would be a non-voting member. (4 voting, 1 non-voting members).
  • A Student Representative from the SGA (1 voting member).
  • Effective fall 2003; with requisite elections spring 2003.
