General Education Approval Process

Ill. Approval Phase

  1. Receive approval from the Cluster Committee
    • Course approval must already be completed by the appropriate College C & I Committee(s)
    • Recommendation for approval will be based on full evaluation, including assessment data (evidence of student learning) and judgment of how well the proposal meets cluster objectives, "Guiding Principles" and general education philosophy. Practical issues of implementation, such as enrollment and resource issues, may also be considered
  2. Post on curriculum website for College C & I Committees and Libraries and Educational Technologies for initial review and comment
    • General education C & I liaison will alert other units that the proposal has been posted.
    • Hard copy, including appendices and supporting documentation will be available in the General Education Office
    • Comments go back to the Cluster Committee (within 15 days)
  3. Cluster Committee reviews and responds to comments
    • Communication occurs between Cluster Committee & proposal authors
    • Questions and comments are responded to by the Cluster Committee to the appropriate College C & I Committee or Libraries and Educational Technologies (within 15 days)
    • Changes made if necessary and sent to General Education Council
  4. Receive approval from the General Education Council C & I
    • The General Education C & I vote-- faculty and student members of the General Education Council
    • Recommendation for approval will be based on full evaluation, including assessment data (evidence of student learning) and judgment of how well proposal meets cluster objectives, "Guiding Principles" and general education philosophy. Practical issues of implementation, such as enrollment and resource issues, may also be considered.
  5. Receive approval by Dean of General Education
  6. Post on JMU curriculum website (www://secureweb.jmu.edu/curric)
    • The General Education Program's C& I liaison will alert other units that the approved proposal has been posted
    • Accessible to faculty for 15 days
  7. Significant program modifications only submitted to Academic Programs Committee (CAP)
  8. Questions and concerns to be resolved by General Education Council
    • All questions will be answered, but formal response is limited to those groups with curricular standing - the college C & I Committees and the Libraries and Educational Technologies unit.
    • Communication between Dean, Cluster Committee, General Education Council, proposal authors, and College C & I Committee or representative of Libraries and Educational Technologies as appropriate
    • Formal questions and comments are responded to by the General Education Council (within 15 days)
  9. Receive approval from VPAA
  10. Approved
    • Posting removed from curriculum website
