O'Charley's
Salads, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, steaks, seafood. Reasonable prices and an overall casual, family-style restaurant.
Ruby Tuesday
An amazing salad bar with plenty of add-ons and "all the fixin's." Ruby Tuesday offers salads, sandwiches, steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers, and desserts.
Panera
An "upscale Subway." They have Panini-type sandwiches and a wide variety of salads, fresh breads, soups and deli-style desserts and breads.
Subway
$5 foot-longs...always a good decision!
Qdoba
For all the Mexican-food fanatics, this is a great place. It is exactly like Subway, except with burrito's, quesadillas, and Mexican salads. You can customize your meal.
Quiznos
Yet another sub-sandwich place which offers a variety of oven-roasted sandwiches and salads. (Impossible to see from WalMart, but more or less behind Ruby Tuesday.)
Red Panda Buffet
For $10 you can have all of the gloriously delicious Chinese food that you desire.
McAllister's
A favorite among JMU students, this is an enormous deli that offers delicious sandwiches, salads, "stuffed potatoes," and desserts. (A personal favorite and highly recommended by the student who compiled this list!)
Delicious Middle Eastern food. The hummus and baba ganouj are good and the Number 81 gyro is to die for. The pita bread is not only homemade, it is baked when you order it. For some reason, this place also has good fries.
From Walmart, exit the parking lot at the light next to Panera. Turn left and then right into a strip mall area.
Custom made burgers and huge bags of fries. (Five Guys is not actually in the strip mall. It is directly in front of you if you are at the light next to Panera). Limited seating!
Salads, sandwiches, ribs, some seafood, and lunch combos.
In the words of our student: "Mr. J's is the epitome of JMU students' breakfast and further dining foods." It offers New-York style bagel sandwiches, breakfast foods, and deli-style sandwiches. Highly recommended for breakfast and any other meal. "One should not leave JMU without eating here."
This is a nicer type of restaurant that prepares and serves the usual array of Italian foods and good pizza. Recommended for a nicer dining experience.
Father Afield, But Still in the Neighborhood
If your back is to Mr. J's Bagels and Deli, you're facing Route 33 (also called East Market Street). Turn right onto Route 33 (East Market Street) to reach:
Large Mexican Menu. They have a sister restaurant on South Main Street closer to Carrier Library.

"This is an amazing restaurant and definitely a must-eat place," according to the student who wrote these reviews. It has three floors for dining (the top floor is an open veranda on the roof, weather permitting). Dave's offers a wide assortment of Greek-inspired foods as well as American favorites. "Their "Taverna Burger" is quite possibly the best burger in the world," according to the reviewer.
(540) 881-8881
This restaurant is a bit more "upscale" and offers salads, steaks, seafood, pastas, and sandwiches. There is an amazing bar both upstairs and downstairs as well as live music every night. The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere.
An eclectic coffee shop that offers sandwiches and wraps. "Definitely a very cool and an enjoyable experience." They have an amazing chocolate cake, too. The interior is, as the name implies, a bit funky.
(540) 433-0313
Ditto to the Dodger, but instead of cake, they have gelato and a great selection of reading materials. Quieter than the Dodger at night, too.
(540) 434-8777
Cally's is located in one of downtown's historic buildings. Once a brewing station, Cally's is an awesome place to eat, drink, and be merry. Same types of foods that can be found pretty much anywhere including pastas, steaks, nice appetizers. This is the place for interesting brews.
(540) 432-6453
The Blue Nile is downtown, but two blocks farther north than Court Square. Look for Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on your right. The Blue Nile is right across the street. The restaurant is in a renovated storefront and has a wonderful atmosphere. The food is delicious and authentic.
(540) 432-8280
As the name implies, this is one of two places downtown for tea. E&T also has a good selection of soups, salads, and wraps. The owner is from South America and those influences show in the food offerings.
(540) 432-8942
Mrs. Hardesty's is located inside the Hardesty Higgins House (look for the Harrisonburg Tourism and Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance signs, both also housed here). Mrs. Hardesty's is an old fashioned tea room with pretty tablecloths, china, and a wide selection of teas. You may also have lunch here, but reservations are pretty much a necessity. Be sure to either have or take away one of the scones. You've never tasted a scone like this one - dee-lish-ous!
(540) 434-6980
Kline's Dairy Bar is a Harrisonburg institution located one-half block north of the Blue Nile and around the corner from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
