Student Reactions to the 2004 Conference

I have been inspired to do some writing of my own in hopes that I too, can recover my true emotions and reevaluate what is valuable to me.

-Beverly Davis

The poets spoke with such enthusiasm and spirit, that the whole room became engulfed and empathetic to what the poet spoke. [At the Poetry Jam] the poem has soul…I walked out more cultured and more whole as a person.
-Seth Powers

Even though our [blacks & whites] actions and our histories are so different, we still have the same story, which makes us much more alike than many people believe… The entire conference propelled me to a higher level of literary understanding. From the play the first night to the poems on the last night, I just kept thinking, 'I want to be a poet, I want to be a poet, I want to be a poet.'
-Casey Boutwell

I thought that all of the poets had a wonderful way with words, and they have inspired me a great deal.
-Cristina Fernandez

Dolores Kendrick has a fascinating style that let her reach far into themes of schizophrenia, the fear of flying, drowning and a slave mother's struggle not to be sold without her daughter…

-Joan Walda

The Furious Flower Poetry Conference was probably not only the pinnacle of my short time here at JMU and as an undergraduate university student, but it was also the highlight of my literary learning.
-Keith Speers

I fell in love with Dolores Kendrick's poetry as soon as she uttered her first word. Her poem about the slave auction was absolutely amazing. 'Look lively, we may be sold, but we ain't bought.' This phrase was the peak of her poem [and] made me feel empowered to fight for social justice…
-David Champagne

I was moved today. I was flabbergasted. Some of the most beautiful words I have ever heard…it made me want to write.

-Nhan Le
