"Poetry as Compass: A Collegiate Summit"

During this two-day summit for college students, they practiced elements of craft and demonstrated how poetry can be used in community service and outreach.  They learned from renowned poets, including members of the Affrilachian Poets Writers' Collective.

Summit Events Included:

  • Workshops on the craft of poetry. 
  • A poetry reading and book signing at the acclaimed Virginia Festival of the Book.
  • A chance to share original work at a poetry jam hosted by JMU's Word is Born Writers' Society!
  • A panel discussion and a student forum to discuss how the arts are relevant to issues facing this generation.
  • A Poets’ Q&A. Learning about M.F.A. programs and publication.

The registration fee was $50 for non-JMU students and included meals and workshop materials.
