August 2011

Aug. 1-5:  7th Annual Children's Poetry Camp "Word Pebbles in a Pond", at 9:00a.m. - 2:00p.m. Monday through Friday for children 8 - 14 years of age in JMU's Memorial Hall; $50 registration fee includes lunch and snacks; scholarships are available.

September 2011

Sept. 22:  Poetry Reading by Glenis Redmond, at 4:00p.m. in JMU's Taylor Hall, Room 404; free and open to the public; for more information about Glenis Redmond, click here.

Oct. 10:  Registration opens for "Poetry as Compass:  A Collegiate Summit", at James Madison University; workshops and readings hosted by renowned poets, including members of the Affrilachian Writer's Collective; for more information, click here.

Oct. 21:  Africana Studies Conference Keynote Address by Dr. Daryl Cumber Dance, the "Dean of Folkculture", at 5:00p.m. in JMU's Festival Ballroom A; co-sponsored with the Furious Flower Poetry Center; for more information about Dr. Daryl Dance, click here.

Oct. 30:  Tribute event, "Speak the Truth to the People," honoring poets Mari Evans and Lerone Bennett, Jr. at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, IL.

November 2011

Nov. 7:  Children's Winter Poetry Contest begins; an original work of poetry will be chosen from those submitted and the author will win a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum; click here for more information.

Nov. 7-11:  Community poem "James Madison University" written by JMU students, faculty, and staff, at Warren Hall, ISAT, and HHS.

Nov. 19:  "Illumination: Out of the Dark,"  Poetry Jam and Open Mic at 7:00p.m. in JMU's Taylor Down Under, Taylor Hall; sponsored by the Furious Flower Poetry Center and Word Is Born Writers' Society; for more information about Word Is Born, click here.

Nov. 28:  Deadline to submit a poem for the Children's Winter Poetry Contest.

December 2011

April 26:  Poet-Tree Reading, the staffs of the Furious Flower Poetry Center and the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum invite poets to bring a poem to read at the annual Poet-Tree Reading held in the Arboretum at 4:00p.m.

June 15-December 30:  Among Poets:  Remembering Lucille Clifton, Maryland's Poet Laureate at the Reginald F. Lewis Musuem in Baltimore, MD; Lynda Koolish's exhibit will showcase her images of Lucille Clifton; Opening Reception at 6:00p.m.
