Piedmont (Piemonte)

Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy, but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland led to an important commercial transit network which has favored its present economic development. It is the largest Italian region second only to Sicily. The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south. The Alps mark the natural border with France to the west and with Switzerland to the north; the Apennines in the south mark the natural border with Liguria.
