| ... People continue to be exiled in the modern era. Some must flee persecution on account of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. ......When a person can document a credible fear of persecution based upon one of these grounds, he or she is eligible for political asylum in the United States. By following actual U.S. asylum applications, I will examine what it is like, legally and psychologically, for a person to make this showing. (Particularly in a post-September 11 environment with INS reform on the horizon.) Witnesses are not available when government agents are torturing you. There are no photographers or CNN cameras to document the atrocities. Medical records are typically not available. Further, while it is extremely difficult and embarassing to tell the graphic details of rape and torture, it is even harder to relay such information to foreign government officials, after having been abused by your own government. However, if an applicant fails to relay these details, he or she will be returned to the country that inflicted the abuse. ......This asylum case study will also draw heavily upon the writings of several Nobel literature laureates who have either been exiled or imprisoned because of their writings or political beliefs. (e.g. Such as Gao Xingjian, C. Milosz, W. Soyinka, A. Sholzhenitsyn.) ... Mr. Doyle will be speaking in the Highlands Room at the College Center, at the evening reception organized for the participants and other guests on Thursday, October 24, at 7:00 pm. John A. Doyle, Jr., Esq.
