Andrei Kushnir is a Washington, D.C.-based artist who has been painting American landscapes outdoors, en plein air, for more than 30 years. This exhibition is the result of Kushnir’s decade-long project that began in 2004 to explore the natural and cultural landscapes of the Shenandoah Valley. His paintings depict popular landmarks as well as lesser-known places treasured by local residents, and represent a broad sampling of the Valley’s communities, roads, farmlands, forests, mountains and waterways. Kushnir has works in the permanent collections of the U.S. Coast Guard, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and Virginia Historical Society; his solo exhibition at the VHS was the first granted to a living artist. www.andreikushnir.com
